Whenever I start to feel a little too overwhelmed by daily responsibilities and adult commitments, there’s always one friend who suggested I should try to divert some of the thoughts in my mind by engaging in a creative project. Painting mandalas, for example, or getting into knitting. It always sounds like an amazing plan. I’m a very creative person, so I love to spend my weekends with a blank canvas or getting into yet another crafty activity. However, here’s the thing: I don’t need anyone to pressure me; I can do it on my own. So, I undertake a new project usually for fun, because it feels like a bright idea. I have an amazing picture of what this “creative project” should look like in my head. I start to work on it, thinking I’m actually feeling more and more relaxed as I go. Wrong, very wrong. At this point, lines are not straight, and rhymes are not rhyming, and everything slowly starts to go south. After a couple of days, I give up altogether, because my vision is just not translating the way it should. Fast forward a week, and I start feeling stressed again, so guess what? I have the brilliant idea of getting creative once more. In less than a month, I have an endless list of unfinished creative activities waiting for me in the corner of my room. At that point, I give myself an imaginary (yet very strict) deadline, and I end up doing everything the night before, and disliking the results of it all. But, no worries, a year later I will probably find them tucked in some drawer and think to myself, “Wow, it's not as bad as I remember…in fact, it's actually good”. Just press the “repeat” button on this cycle, and you’ve got yourself the actual creative process.

Now, if this is me in my free time, imagine how bad it gets at work. As a writer, the creative process is my life, which means I’m constantly questioning my own creativity on a daily basis, while also having a lot of doubts about my career path altogether. That said, whenever I don’t have anything creative to do, I completely lose my mind as well. The real “can’t live with or without it”.

In any case, keep the creativity flowing and enjoy / suffer the process!
